Summary

Should your investment portfolio as a follower of Jesus look any different from everyone else’s? Do our Biblical values have implications for our 401K? Robin John and Finny Kuruvilla founded Eventide Investments because they believe the answer is a resounding, “Yes!” They join Curtis to explore how we as Christians can pursue a kind of financial investing that “makes the world rejoice.”

Hi, everyone. This is Curtis, and I am excited to tell you about a new feature of the GoodFaith podcast and it's called Campfire Stories.

0:11.0

Now, in a great campfire, everyone has the opportunity to share their stories. And so in Campfire Stories, we want to hear from you.

0:20.0

We want to hear a story about what you are doing along the themes of the GoodFaith podcast.

0:27.0

Perhaps it's something about how you're living out your relationships with political polarization, how you are trying to reflect the image of God in your institution and organization, or what you're doing with your money, or your vocation, anything that has been sparked by the themes that we've covered here in the GoodFaith podcast is fear game.

0:47.0

It doesn't matter if it's a big story, a small story, or something in between, as long as it's a story about what you are doing in your life.

0:55.0

We're not so much interested in hearing just thoughts. We want to hear stories of doing.

1:00.0

So we'll put a link in the show notes where you can just click on it and then supply us the basic outlines of your story of doing of living out the themes of GoodFaith podcast.

1:11.0

And we'll look at it and we may invite you to share that story on a GoodFaith blog, a social media, or perhaps even invite you to come on the GoodFaith show yourself and talk to me and share your story.

1:25.0

Like how cool would that be? I'd love to hear from you. I'd love to talk with you. So please consider joining the campfire by actually joining actively and sharing your story with others gathered around the campfire.

Welcome to the GoodFaith podcast on your host Curtis Chang. The GoodFaith podcast is a production of redeeming Babel and it's where friends who follow Jesus help each other make sense of the world.

2:10.0

Now a big reason why I started redeeming Babel and have continued the podcast is I really feel passionately about this mission of helping Christians make sense of the world, especially the parts of the world that they tend to leave the world to make sense of for them and not their life of following Jesus.

2:29.0

And I think there's ways in which we as Christians can really kind of open up parts of our lives to Jesus, our prayer life, our relationships, our marriages and so forth.

2:39.0

But other parts of our life we just unquestioningly let the world make sense of it for us. And I believe one of those areas is the activity of investing.

2:51.0

Investing in the stock market for instance is a primary way that Christians actually engage with the world. If you step back and look at all of America, the latest statistics show that something like 61% of Americans have money invested in the stock market either directly through stocks or through a mutual fund and index fund or something like that.

3:14.0

So 61% of Americans, my guess is among the listeners of this good faith podcast that's probably more like over 90% of our listeners have some part of your wealth, your money invested in the stock market.

3:29.0

And that's a massive amount of money. I mean the total amount of money invested stock market is I think I looked it up was like something like 91 trillion dollars.

3:37.0

So you think about the Christian share of that that's a huge amount of money. And yet I if you actually looked at the investment practices at the investment holdings.

3:47.0

If you looked at the portfolios of Christians and their investments and you compared it with the average portfolio and practices of most non Christians.

3:57.0

I would hazard to say that your on average not going to see actually that much difference at all that the investment practices are going to look very similar on average between Christians and non Christians.

4:09.0

Is that okay? I mean is investing kind of the you know similar to breathing or drinking or cooking where well of course we're all human beings we all do it the same way regardless of our faith commitments or not.

4:23.0

Or does a commitment to follow Jesus with our heart soul mine with everything we have does that actually affect how we practice investing in the world as well.
