Summary

Can parents ever really know what’s happening inside their kids’ phones? This episode takes a hard look at how Instagram says it’s protecting teens—and whether those promises hold up. Instagram’s Global Director of Public Policy, Tara Hopkins, explains the new “teen accounts,” parental supervision tools, and age verification systems. We also ask how these safety features actually work in practice, what still slips through the cracks, and what it means when the people building social media are also parents trying to keep their own kids safe online. And if you've listened to this show for more than two minutes, you know that I have constant

0:47.6

easy to demonize meta and these platforms and say, I wish they'd just go away. I wish they didn't exist.

0:55.7

The fact is that's not going to happen. The train has left the station. So I think it's really

0:59.7

important to have regular conversations with the people who are building these platforms,

1:05.0

not just talking about them, but actually with the people inside meta, inside TikTok.

1:10.7

Because if we don't, we are just yelling into the algorithmic void.

So today I'm talking to Tara Hopkins.

1:17.1

She is Instagram's Global Director of Public Policy.

1:20.2

And she's here to walk us through what it says it's doing to protect teens,

1:23.9

support parents, and make Instagram a safer place for young users.

1:28.4

I do not know if all of these safeguards work, but we're going to get into that.

1:32.9

We're going to talk about the new teen account settings, parental supervision tools,

1:36.9

what is working, what is not, and what kinds of feedback meta says they're getting from families.

1:43.4

And look, I really liked Tara. I really

1:45.8

liked this conversation, but I'm coming into it skeptical. I am because I've seen plenty of shiny
