Summary

In this episode of the Everything Electric Podcast, Robert Llewellyn is joined by Tim Jarratt, Executive for External Affairs & Strategy at Ausgrid, to unpack what's actually happening to our power networks, and why electric vehicles may not be the biggest challenge after all.

While much of the world debates EV adoption, Australia is already living through a quiet energy revolution. Nearly 40% of Australian homes now have rooftop solar, turning the traditional one-way grid into a complex, two-way system where your neighbour might be powering your kettle.

Tim explains how Ausgrid is rethinking the grid from the ground up, squeezing more capacity from existing infrastructure, rolling out community batteries, and planning for a future shaped by data centres, electric transport, and millions of small power producers.

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Everything Electric podcast.

0:15.2

Now coming today from Australia, although I am in the UK, so I'm slightly jealous because it's very cold in the UK and it's

0:23.5

extraordinarily warm in Australia at the moment but today's guest is works for

0:32.0

Osgrid which is the large grid network that delivers electricity and also kind of takes in supplies from roofed-up solar

0:42.0

from big solar farms, from wind farms,

0:44.9

from energy storage systems, from pumped hydro and coal and gas,

0:50.7

yes, still, but much, much less.

0:58.1

And it's a fascinate, reason i'm just i think it's worth if you don't live in australia and you have nothing to do with australia it's worth watching simply

1:02.6

because what is going taking place there is kind of giving us a clue as to how we will adapt our

1:08.9

grids to cope with enormous increases in electricity demand,

1:13.1

particularly from data centres, interestingly.

1:15.7

That's the main challenge for the global grid at the moment.

1:19.0

It's not electric cars, electric cars that make very little impact.

1:22.4

But data centres literally beat the living daylights out of our electricity grid and the way we generate and use power.

1:30.0

So we should be very aware that anyone who waffles on about how amazing data centers are needs to be pummeled as well.

1:38.8

Anyway, that's just my own beef.

1:41.1

But it is fascinating to see what is happening there and how quickly it's changing.

1:46.0

It's so rapid. It's so incredibly the shift is happening so quickly. Just before we start, I just

1:52.7

want to say, do please subscribe to the Everything Electric podcast. It's not like it costs you any money.

1:59.6

It doesn't cost you anything and it makes a huge

2:01.7

difference to us. That would be really good. And also if you tell your friends, family, and particularly

2:07.2

if you have an annoying uncle or cousin or neighbor or that person at work who goes on about,
