Hello and welcome to Business Daily. I'm Rahul Tandon, and with the world's biggest climate

talks about to start, I'm taking a look at the country that's emitting more greenhouse gases

right now than anywhere else on this planet. The country we're talking about,

of course, is China. But the story, well, it's not quite that simple. China is both the biggest

contributor to the problem and the biggest contributor to the solution at the same time. So, on the one

hand, China is the world's biggest polluter,

and it's got a big problem with one fossil fuel in particular, coal.

Coal is the most carbon-intensive fossil fuel.

I think coal plants are really the number one fossil fuel we need to get rid of.

And though it's pledged to stop financing coal projects abroad,

China is still approving more new coal-fired power stations at home

at a faster rate than any other country.

It remains politically challenging for China to rein in coal power more quickly.

But here's the contradiction.

On the other hand, China is leading the world in the race to build green energy.

The landscape changes where you see millions of solar panels just on the farms and then on the ground.

So the question we're posing is, can China end its love affair with coal

in time to keep up to its net zero promises?
