Just 10 years ago, an entire state running on 100% clean power seemed like a distant fantasy.

But that vision became reality when California committed to 100% use of zero carbon energy by the year 2045.

The state's pledged to go carbon neutral at the same time raised the stakes even higher.

This is truly a life-changing kind of goal.

It's not something that we can do in small steps incrementally.

It's going to be big.

Mary Nichols is chair of the California Air Resources Board, a position she's held since Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed her in 2007.

She believes the technology and the will exist to not only reduce California's emissions,

but to remove carbon from its atmosphere.

We have been polluting for free since we learned how to burn logs,

and if we take it up through the 20th century, we got into really bad habits.

John Hoffmeister is former president of Shell Oil Company in California.

He thinks the path to carbon neutrality will be technological and driven by business more than public policy,

especially in transportation, where Americans' mobility habits will

drive automakers to adapt.
