Summary

Ohio State is 4-0, ranked No. 3 in the country and is coming off a win of a top-10 team. Therefore, everyone in Buckeye Nation is of course ... complaining?

Yes, that's right. And you can add us to the list of spoiled brats because we wonder aloud on today's show what is wrong with the Buckeyes' defense this season and whether it can be fixed.

However, the good news is that Ohio State looks like an elite team -- especially an elite offense -- for large chunks of games. They also appear to have the Big Ten title on near lockdown.

The Buckeyes will travel to Illinois this Saturday, and Steve Helwagen joins Dave Biddle on today's show to talk about OSU's defense, how Kerry Coombs is doing as defensive coordinator, the upcoming matchup with the Fighting Illini and much more.

Steve a lot to get into today.

Let's start with what has to be the number one story for Ohio State fans is what is going on with this defense and you know at times they'll look really good. You know I mean they look good for a while there. I mean you get up 35 to 7 against a good offense like Indiana you're

0:44.5

feeling pretty good there in the third quarter and then the wheels came off they

0:47.4

started giving up big plays like it was 2018 all over again what are you seeing

0:52.4

with this defense giving up all these big plays? Can it be fixed? What are you seeing out there Steve?

0:58.1

Well, Dave, they've got several issues and I, uh, one of our posters put up several of the plays they gave up four plays of 50 yards or longer and that is very shiano-esque as we recall back there as you mentioned in 2018 where they routinely gave up long plays in fact

1:15.9

what was it in a 15 day period they'd never given up in 120 years of OSU football

1:21.5

90-yard plays and they gave up a 90-yard run and a 90-yard pass in a span of 15 days under the

1:27.8

great Greg Schiano Rutgers Renaissance man. But yeah, people don't want to revert to that and I think it's

1:36.9

several issues first of all and I keep saying this there was no spring

1:41.4

football you said seven guys to the NFL, including Chase Young. And I think his absence is maybe even bigger than the problems they have in the secondary.

1:52.5

Well, that's not possible.

1:53.9

Okay.

1:56.3

I think that it begins up front.

1:59.5

And I sit here and I scratch my head about Zach Harrison.

2:03.8

He got there on the second or third series

2:06.5

and hit the quarterback's arm.

2:08.1

It was disputed whether it was a fumble or an incomplete pass.
