Summary

On this Friday Buckeye Talk, Stephen Means, Nathan Baird and Andrew Gillis break down Ohio State's home opener against Youngstown State and make their picks. Here's what gets discussed: The conversation starts by trying to figure out how to talk about a matchup between one of the nation's most prominent programs and a middle-of-the-pack FCS school Then the trio discuss what OSU can show on offense and defense to let them know there was improvement coming off Week 1, even if it won't be easy to see it actually play out. Then again Stephen kicks the two off the pod and invites Tyler Shoemaker to discuss the game from a gambling perspective. Then the trio returns to make their game picks. Hey, hey, where you been? But God talk is about to begin. Hey, hey, hey, come on in.

0:31.0

Welcome back to book. I talk, Steve. It means Nathan Baird and Andrew Gillis Ohio State will play youngstown state in its home opener, not season opener. They'd be in the end of the season.

0:43.0

No, for 23, this will be their home opener for the 2023 season. The game is at noon and what's this news on the way Nathan, you asked about the quarterback situation, but not the actual pending quarterback situation.

0:58.0

More just like the depth of the room conversation. And by his answer, I have a thought on what the answer grind that gave you asked him if Lincoln the keyhole was going to play basically because you've got four guys that you four scholarship, four scholarship quarterbacks to choose from what did he say?

1:16.0

So, yeah, as we mentioned on the Thursday pod, when we were drafting these players, I think Lincoln, he knows it was one of my honorable mentions that nobody drafted him, but I was like, oh, with, you know, true freshman, is this a kind of game where he'll get a chance to play.

1:29.0

And Ryan Day's answer was very much we want to play him. Eventually, we hope he gets into a game, but the crux of the answer is he's red-shirting, which makes obvious sense.

1:42.0

They've got he's fourth on the depth chart. And this is why they like having four. He's a late enrollee from South Dakota, who was not a full-time football player. There's a lot of reasons why you want to red-shirt him. So I would say it's unlikely that he plays Saturday against Youngstown State. I think part of that reason is they need to use they will probably push.

2:04.0

If this were a situation where Kamakord was had just run away with the starting quarterback job, or maybe it's last year and you have CJ Stroud, which good lord, good lord CJ Stroud going against.

2:17.0

He gets Youngstown State. Nobody needs to see that. It's bad enough that it's going to be Tristan Jevia eventually.

2:25.0

But if it had been a situation like that, take last year's quarterback room. Stroud would have played like maybe the first series of the third quarter, and then Kamakord takes over, and then maybe Devon Brown gets in like the last half of the fourth quarter, right?

2:39.0

I have a feeling that just because of these circumstances, they want to see Devon Brown as much as possible. So you're essentially going to get the 1B quarterback pretty deep into this game, right?

2:48.0

And then I think they want to reward Tristan Jevia with some play as well, because he is third on this list, and because he's doing all these things that they like, and being the GA of the quarterback room basically.

3:00.0

But long story short, I think on top of all of that, I definitely got a vibe from my day that like maybe it's a little too early for Lincoln Keenholds.

3:09.0

And we actually saw him do some interesting things I thought in producing camp. He had some wiggle. He's an athletic guy. I'm curious what he's going to be like, and how he's going to factor into future quarterback competitions that are going to be coming up here in another two years or whatever.

3:25.0

I think that's going to be potentially pretty fun. I just like I just want to see him play.

3:29.0

So because we didn't see any really in-depth preseason camp, I was hoping he would get to play and we get a little flash of it.

3:36.0

But I would say unlikely that he gets in this early. So now you're hoping that they really put a thumping on some guys late in the season, and maybe we'll get to actually see Jevia, or I'm sorry, actually get to see Lincoln Keenholds play.

3:49.0

And the thing about him too is he's probably not going to throw a pass when he gets into those games late in the season, but because he is athletic, you can get out there and run it a little bit and show what he's got in that capacity.

4:00.0

But I would say if there is a fourth quarterback who takes any snaps at all, it'll probably be a walk on Saturday.

4:08.0

The Lincoln Keenholds, Aaron Nolan, 2025 quarterback battle Nathan Baird already preparing for it.

4:15.0

I thought of two people with the Lincoln Keenhold situation. Devon Brown got to play against the non-power five school last year.

4:22.0

He played in that Toledo game. He played nine snaps and obviously played in the Rutgers game, six snaps. They only had three in that situation.
