Here's an email from Deb, and she says, I'm a new relevant radio listener, and here's my question.

My family was raised Catholic, my younger sister, brother, and I left the Catholic faith and attended the Lutheran Church.

Thus, I have a Lutheran goddaughter who is getting married in the Lutheran church, and she asked me to do the readings.

I have been a devout Catholic now for 20 years. Can I do the

readings at her Lutheran wedding? Well, I believe the answer is yes on this, for this reason. Number one,

she's family, although that's incidental to the issue, but I think that adds another level of yes to it.

She's doing something good insofar as she's getting married,

and that's a good thing.

That's an institution established by God.

If she's getting married as a Lutheran in the Lutheran Church,

she's not doing anything wrong thereby.

Now, if she were Catholic, getting married

in the Lutheran Church, that's a problem because she's not doing what Catholics are obliged to do, get married according to the church's canonical form. But that's not a problem here. So I don't see any obstacles. I'm glad to hear that you are attentive and conscious of the fact that you don't want to do something that you shouldn't do. But I don't think

this qualifies in that area. Now, if she said, we're going to have our Lutheran church service on

Sunday, and we'd like you to help distribute Holy Communion or something like that, you obviously at that

point would say, no, I can't participate in a church service. I can't do that. I'm a Catholic and I don't even believe that your communion is anything more than a piece of bread. I mean, obviously say that respectfully, but in this case, you're not doing anything wrong. You would be helping celebrate your goddaughter's wedding and the circumstances that you describe are, for her, at least,

they're good. So if you're asking for my advice, which I guess you are, I would say, yeah,

go and have fun. And maybe you can encourage her to take a look at the Catholic Church,

and who knows, maybe she'll become Catholic.
