In New York, first Italy's conservative government has hit banks there with a one-time 40 percent

windfall tax.

The government says banks there have been quick to hike interest rates for borrowers, but

not so quick to increase what they pay customers who save.

Italian officials say the money from the tax will go to make mortgages cheaper for first

time buyers and for tax cuts, Sanjay Daskupta's with our newsroom partners, the BBC.

Mateo Salvini told reporters in Rome that one had only to look at bank profits for the

first half of the year to realize that it wasn't just a few millions at stake, but billions.

He said the 40 percent levy would be a one-off and would fund tax cuts and financial support

expected.

Exports dropped to steep 14.5 percent compared to last year.
