Twitter at Matt Barrows Matt you've been doing this for so long and this is probably got to be one of the most

interesting off seasons in your tenure as a 49ers beat writer, right?

Oh yeah, for sure.

I think that was a way of saying that I look old,

am old, but I'll give you a pass on that.

I mean, yeah, this is basically the third time I've been covering this team when they've had a high profile quarterback coming in.

Alex Smith in 2005, Colin Capernic in 2011, and now Trey Lance.

And I can say without reservation that Lance looks the best out of all three, those guys. I mean, the circumstances were so different each one I don't even think we should you know

include Kapernik he had a an injury coming into that 2011 season.

That's the lockout season too, so there was no off season.

And so I don't think the plan was ever to really use him as a rookie,

and they didn't. It wasn't until the next year, that's when they started to fold him in and that was the Alex Smith concussion year and that's when he started to roll. But as far as rookie seasons, this is

hands down the most impressive performance I've seen from a rookie.

And Matt, I mean, this is a very unique situation as well.

Like, have you ever seen a coach go about it in a way to where he might use a two-quarterback

system? Well, I mean, a little bit in 2012, I mean, I forget what, I have to go back and look at what the

snap counts were.

I don't think, Kappernik was getting more than, I don't think Capernic was getting more than I don't know three or four
