New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton will remain away from the team until Thursday

due to a, quote, misunderstanding on COVID-19 tests conducted away from NFL facilities.

The club announced.

Newton's absence comes after he traveled to a Patriots-approved medical appointment

that required him to leave the New England region, according to the team's statement.

That's what the breaking news from ESPN sounded like this afternoon on that Cam Newton COVID protocol news, which I think was kind of a whopper.

I think it's kind of a whopper because I think it should cost Cam Newton's job.

I do not think you can have a starting quarterback that has not been vaccinated and is thus subject to all these extra protocols in the league. And we don't even know what they are.

Why would we?

But the long and short of it is that you could have a simple slip up and then be subject to what we're learning is a five-day

cadence protocol of rolling tests before you're allowed back in the building.

Cam Newton, according to the team statement, hasn't tested positive for COVID.

He just got tested in the wrong place on the wrong day and now has to do this rolling

five-day business before he's allowed back in the building or on the field.

So he's going to miss the bulk, if not the entirety of these joint practices against the Giants.

He's going to miss four days of practice leading into the final preseason game, the final tune-up for the regular season, important practices.

He's out.

And so I ask, how can you have a football team with the starting quarterback who is subjected to these protocols?
