While this week's films might make the Italian tourist board happy,

their characters are wrapped up in secret desires, heartbreak, and even murder. Anthony Mangela's 1999 thriller, The Talented Mr. Ripley, transforms Patricia Highsmith's novel into a story of

sublimated gay desire as an American con artist travels to Italy to lure a shipping air back to the

States, but falls in love with him instead.

The new coming of age drama, Call Me By Your Name, is also about an American visitor overseas.
