There's a regional bank here that the world is watching today.

Stoc in New York Community Bank Corp fell nearly 30% yesterday and its futures are down a bit more this morning.

The Credit Ratings Agency, Moody's downgraded the bank to junk status yesterday amid concerns

about souring commercial real estate loans the bank holds.

Other mid-sized banks are also exposed to commercial real estate

as sector hit hard by our preference for working from home. Some investors fear a

repeat of the banking crisis that took down several institutions nearly a year ago.

Then rapidly rising interest rates were the main culprit.

Now it's slowly sinking commercial real estate values as vacancies mount.

Regional and mid-sized banks hold a lot of commercial real

estate loans. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen yesterday told a House

Financial Services Committee hearing that some banks may be quite stressed,

her words, by real estate loans, but she

thought the problem was manageable.
