Summary

CaliforniaCalifornia’s problems didn’t happen overnight—they’re the result of decades of policy choices that prioritized ideology over infrastructure, energy, and economic reality. Victor Davis Hanson argues the state abandoned its fundamentals, while Elaine Culotti points to runaway bureaucracy, middlemen siphoning public funds, and mandates that burden working families. They challenge the sustainability of a system dependent on a shrinking tax base and warn that overregulation is driving businesses and residents out. The discussion centers on restoring accountability, rebuilding core systems, and rethinking policies that many believe are pushing California toward long-term decline. I've sort of had this awakening since 1991 about how California has changed. And when I wake up in the morning now, I worry about what's

0:28.7

going to happen today and what can I do to fix that and where is the intervention? I used to wake up

0:33.5

every morning and be like, I am the luckiest person on earth to live in this beautiful place.

0:39.6

I think we know what's wrong. It's the leadership in Los Angeles. But was there an agenda

0:45.3

behind the sloth or was it just a state, just the typical California incompetence? Or was there

0:51.7

an ideological agenda that made this disaster worse because it's still

0:57.3

a disaster?

0:58.1

What I think is really important for both Democrats and Republicans to understand, especially

1:02.1

voters, is that the majority of our money goes in the middle before it goes to our problems.

1:07.0

The Pacific Palisades fires, for example, a disaster happens, FEMA comes in, and FEMA has what's called a METOC, a mandatory award task contract or something like that, which then tasks contractors to come in and do work, including be the accountant.

1:22.6

So in our case, it was ECC, was our accountant for the, for the $1.1 billion that came in.

1:28.4

And then they distribute that money to Army Corps of Engineers or Clark Construction,

whoever the security paving.

1:33.7

It doesn't matter.

1:34.5

But the middleman hands out the money.

1:36.7

You'd have to live under Iraq to think that eventually there wouldn't be fraudsters in the middle.

1:42.1

I think you're onto something when you say

1:44.9

mandates, that the state put mandates on formulas for gas, formulas for electric use, clean energy
