Summary

This week, California state officials announced that an effort to recall Governor Gavin Newsom had secured the number of signatures needed to qualify for the ballot this fall. Only two governors have ever been recalled, which includes California's in 2003 — when Gray Davis was booted and Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected. Dan digs into how California politics got to this point, if this effort has its own Schwarzenegger and what we can expect to see this fall with L.A. Times staff writer Phil Willon.

Hi, I'm Dan Pramack, and welcome to Axios Recap, presented by General Motors. Today's Tuesday, April 27th.

California state officials yesterday announced that an effort to recall Governor Gavin Newsom

0:26.1

has secured the number of signatures needed to qualify for the ballot, with a statewide

0:30.6

vote likely by year end. Why it matters is twofold. First, because California's governor

0:36.1

0:38.5

largest state by population, but also the world's fifth largest economy. Second, because

in 2003, when Gray Davis was booted and Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected. That latter one,

current troubles mostly relate to his COVID-19 policies. And just to be clear, Gavin Newsom hasn't yet been recalled.

1:14.2

1:19.0

be asked to pick a replacement if the recall is successful.

1:22.2

The bottom line, California's chief executive is about to face the voters, two years earlier

1:27.2

than he had expected.

1:28.8

In 15 seconds, we'll go deeper into the reasons for the recall, and if anyone, such as Caitlin

Jenner, has a legitimate shot of winning with Phil Willan of the LA Times.

But first, this.

1:42.6

We're joined now by Phil Willan, who covers the governor's office and state politics for the

LA Times.
