Summary

In this sample from the CAFE Insider podcast, Preet and Joyce break down the federal civil rights charges against Derek Chauvin and three other former Minneapolis police officers in connection with the killing of George Floyd.   In the full episode, they discuss the debate surrounding a juror in the Chauvin trial whose previously-undisclosed attendance of an MLK-inspired March on Washington could constitute grounds for an appeal. They also break down the latest in the sagas of Rudy Giuliani and Bill Barr.  To listen to the full episode and get access to all exclusive CAFE Insider content, including audio notes from Preet, Joyce, Elie Honig, Barb McQuade, Asha Rangappa, Melissa Murray, and more try the membership free for two weeks: www.cafe.com/insider Use special code JOYCE for 50% off on the annual membership price.  Sign up to receive the free weekly CAFE Brief newsletter: www.cafe.com/brief This podcast is brought to you by CAFE Studios and Vox Media Podcast Network.  Tamara Sepper – Executive Producer; Adam Waller – Senior Editorial Producer; Matthew Billy – Audio Producer; Jake Kaplan – Editorial Producer REFERENCES & SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS:  U.S. v. Hey folks, another busy week of legal news. Less than three weeks after being convicted

0:06.1

of murder in Minnesota, Derek Chauvin has been indicted by a grand jury on federal

0:10.3

civil rights charges. The indictment also charges three other officers in connection with

0:15.0

the killing of George Floyd. Meanwhile, there's more news in the DOJ's investigation at Rudy

0:19.1

Giuliani. In an unsealed letter, prosecutors in the Southern District of New York asked

0:23.7

a judge to appoint an outside lawyer to review the material seized in the raid of Giuliani's

0:28.3

home. And Bill Barr is back in the news. A federal court judge has taken the unusual

0:33.5

step of criticizing him for being disingenuous about a secret internal DOJ memo. Joyce

Vance and I discuss all this and more on the Cafe Insider podcast. Today we're sharing

you as part of the insider community. Okay. Derek Chauvin, who murdered George Floyd

1:17.7

was convicted on all three state counts. But since we have last met, there has been a

1:24.2

pretty significant development. And I wonder if it's confusing to people. And it's even

1:27.8

a little bit confusing as we were discussing earlier to you and me. Derek Chauvin and

1:32.6

the three other officers who were involved in the incident with George Floyd have all been

1:38.0

indicted federally on federal civil rights charges. And people might ask the question,

1:44.5

I guess there's a few questions. Why, if there was a successful prosecution of Derek Chauvin

1:49.0

in the state, isn't there something in this country called double jeopardy protection,

1:53.7

which means that you can't be charged twice for the same conduct involving the same facts.
