All right. More of those phone calls coming up momentarily. As promised, we start hour number three by having a conversation with the head football coach at BYU. He's in his 10th year at his alma mater.

The Cougars went 11 and 2 last year. They won the Alamo Bowl. They beat West Virginia Friday night, 3824.

0:32.9

They moved to 5 and 0 overall. They're 2 in on Big 12 play. They moved up five spots to number 18 in this week's AP poll, and they will take on Arizona on Saturday. Of course, I'm talking about Kalani-Sataki. Kalani, it's always great to have you on the show. Thanks for making time. How's everything with you and your family, coach? Doing great, Jim. You know, this is a mid-season, and so I'm excited about where we're at.

0:55.8

We're in the conference play now, and happy with what the team's doing and the progress that we're making. I know you are. So why don't we get into that? So while every season is different, you have won your first five games this season. After starting last year, 9-0, so when you get right down to it, what are the biggest reasons for the quick start this year? And what are you most pleased with? Well, I have to give a lot of credit to our leadership on our team, the guys that came back from last year's team. And then we added some really cool talent and guys that fit our program and our culture really well. And then I have to give a lot of credit to the coaches, the assistants, getting this team ready.

1:28.1

They had a great offseason. And so, you know, all I had to do is a head coach is just make sure that to mess it up. But these guys have done an amazing job and really excited with what they're accomplishing on and off the field. It's been really cool. Kalani Sataki joining us. So you've got some new guys. In fact, you've got a new quarterback this season in Bear Bachmeier, the first true freshman in school history to start a season opener.

1:49.7

Given this program's history, and especially at that position, man, that is really saying something.

1:54.5

For those who have not seen him yet, what can you tell us about Bear as a competitor and a player?

2:00.5

Well, I've been really impressed with his maturity and his ability to understand the game.

2:05.1

His football IQ is, I mean, it's off the charts.

2:07.9

And then just his patience and understanding where he's at, I think a lot of times young guys

2:13.5

want to get in there and just want to take over the world.

2:17.2

And I think for him is

2:18.9

understanding that this is a progress for him to to work slowly through and that we've seen him

2:23.7

every week get better and better and in his game and also understanding the office but he he's been

2:29.1

such a good teammate to his uh to his uh to the rest of the team that i mean it's been it's, it's like he's been here forever. And that's, that's saying a lot for his maturity and his willingness to be part of the team and be part of our culture. I mean, don't be surprised, but he wears number 47, and that's a good thing. It's an amazing thing, actually. Like, you and I have talked so much in the past about the importance of family in the program,

3:08.8

then how cool is it? And I don't want to see him fit in with everybody else, but to have him throw to his older brother, Tiger, who's a junior wideout. That's a really cool thing. What's that like? Yeah, I mean, we've been really fortunate to get them in the portal. and when things happened with Stanford.

3:41.5

And so, you know, we're really, really excited that they were able to be a part of program. But we knew about them before in the recruiting process and knew that they would be a great fit for our program. And then when they got here, it was like it was a seamless transition. I mean, everything went so easily and the boys just all connected with them. And then they've been part of our family. It just feels like they've been here for a long time. And, you know, they're helping enhance our program and a culture. And I'm really excited by the things that they've added to our program. But more importantly, the teammates and the brothers that they are to each other and the brothers that they are to the teammates. Let's not forget. These are not nicknames either, Clonnie, Tiger and Bear. That is so awesome. What a great story. I love that so much. It's legit, right? Tiger and Bear. Well, you kind of have to be a badass. You're going to have those names. No doubt. Talking to Kalani's Taki. So the defense has been really good so far. They're doing their job and they did it again against West Virginia, held them under 300 yards total. What's working on that side of the ball for you? And you know that you want to be right because you're going to be in conference play even deeper and you're going to face some high-powered, high-octane offenses. What do you like best about that side of the ball right now? Yeah, I love the effort. That's number one, and the commitment to being physical. I think they've done some really cool things this season, but we're still not playing our best ball. There's a lot of things that we can do. I know that our defense coordinator, Jay Hill,, Jay Hill, and the assistants want more from the players on the defense, and they want more production

4:36.2

and more disruption. But that comes by everybody doing their 11th, being more disciplined as a

4:41.6

team on the field and trying to make sure that we're sticking with our assignments,

4:46.5

we're aligned correctly, and we're using the proper technique. We can do all those things. I really like what we can accomplish with this defense. But more importantly, I'm thankful that we have a foundation to work off of which is their effort and their energy. Did Jay tell you that he and I spent some time together this past spring at the John Gordon seminar? I was really impressed, man. I really enjoyed him. What does he mean to the program? What's he been like for you? Well, first of all, I was supposed to be with you guys on that, this summer as well. And I had a prior engagement I had to speak at. And so while you guys are out there having fun playing golf, I was actually putting in some work, you know, and getting some things done trying to become a better leader. But Jay Hill and I speak the same language. We cut our teeth in this business at a young age when we were both assistants at Utah. And so, you know, we've been able to have some great mentors along the way as coaches. And so us to grow at the same time and not being able to run a program, he's been

5:39.1

a successful head coach himself. And so I've been really honored to have him work with me
