Chapter 44, Billy.

2013 to 2015.

It's the end of an era.

Cassie pops the cork champagne spraying across the tar rooftop.

We weren't organized enough to remember glasses, and besides, most of our stuff is packed, so we drink

straight from the bottle. The carbonation inflates our cheeks. It's been three years since

Cassie and I moved into our Alphabet City shoebox, and now it's time to part ways. The decision

wasn't contentious. It's just time. Cassie switched jobs and industries, and her new salary at

Intermix means she can afford her own place, a studio on the Lower East side. Meanwhile,

Remy has been in New York for two years now, and we're itching to live together. I'm moving into his

one bedroom in Harlem. I never thought I'd say it, but I'm going to miss this place.

Cassie passes me the bottle.

She wears a sky-blue halter dress that matches her eyes, and trendy leather sandals with

thin straps that wrap around her ankles.

Her clothes and accessories have gotten nicer since she started the new job.

Cassie has always viewed fashion as a status symbol,

but now, with a discounted intermix, her wardrobe has reached a whole new level. I give a wistful

smile, nostalgia churning through me as we watched the sun go down from the roof of our building

...
