The Tools for Good Works, Episode 6.

The Holy Rule now turns toward the shape of daily Christian life.

St. Benedict doesn't offer lofty ideals. He gives tools. Ordinary, concrete practices that shape

the heart through repetition and fidelity. This shift is important. What has been heard and welcome now takes form

in action, not through pressure or intensity, but through steady habits that gently train

the heart toward God.

From Chapter 4 of the Rule of St. Benedict.

First of all, love the Lord God with your whole heart, your whole soul, and all your strength,

and love your neighbor as yourself.

You must honor everyone and never do to another what you do not want done to yourself.

St. Benedict begins this chapter by naming what orders everything else.

Before he speaks of restraint, patience, or humility, he places love at the center.

The tools of good works aren't techniques for improvement.

There are the outward signs of a heart turned toward God and toward others. That ordering changes everything. Love isn't a passing

feeling. It's a way of living. When love stands at the center, the heart isn't divided by

competing priorities.

Even the smallest act becomes part of one steady path.

The Holy Rule is honest about how love is learned.

It doesn't take root all at once.

Loving God with a whole heart grows through repeated choices that bring daily life into alignment.
