The government shutdown continues, as does the misery for the U.S. traveler.

While there is hope that a deal on Capitol Hill is within reach, what damage have the

last few weeks already caused? It's not just the delays and cancellations today. It's the long-term

damage that this nonsense has inflicted on our air transportation system or aviation system and the

people involved. At least another 1,600 flights are canceled today.

2,300 more delays.

That's according to Flight Aware.

While some of these issues are weather-related passengers across the country continue to be inconvenienced

as the government shutdown persists.

Although some Senate Democrats crossed the aisle late last night to support a tentative plan to fund the government,

it is still uncertain when TSA agents and air traffic controllers will be paid and travel returns to normal.

The timing could not be more critical as we are almost two weeks away from

Thanksgiving and the holiday travel season. So what impact has this shutdown already caused and

what ripple effect does travel uncertainty have on the economy? We've got to put this in context.

Every day there's about 21,000 departures across the USA.

Let's bring in Boyd Group International CEO and aviation expert Mike Boyd.

And there's 1,600 so far today.

Figure 20% of those would have taken place anyway.

Airplanes breaking down and weather and things like that.

So it's more like about a thousand delays or so out of 23,000, 21,000.
