Summary

When Hana was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2011, she went on a research quest to find a donor that could save her life. Through this process, she discovered that another Black donor who shared her ethnicity would be the best fit. But studies show there aren’t enough Black donors to fill the need for Black folks who need transplants. Why?
In this episode, we explore Black organ donation through the story of Arlinda Timmons-Love, a mom who lost her 15 year old son, and navigated the complex feelings related to organ donation.

0:27.6	I remember, yeah, we worked together in the same newsroom and you took some time off for treatment.
0:33.7	It was a blood disease, right?
0:35.6	Mm-hmm, it's called Hodgkin'symphoma, and it's this type of blood cancer.
0:42.2	And so in 2011, that was actually my second time with it.
0:46.5	Hmm.
0:47.1	I didn't know that.
0:48.4	Yeah.
0:48.8	The first time was in 2008, and then it came back in 2011.
0:56.0	Yeah.
0:57.0	And at that point, they said,
1:00.0	this time, I needed to have a stem cell transplant.
1:05.0	My gosh, you are really going through it.
1:08.0	Like, is this like a bone marrow transplant when they kill the cancerous cells and then inject you with healthy cells?
1:15.2	Is that what that is?
1:16.0	Yeah, just like that.
1:17.3	And the doctors were saying, I may need a donor for this transplant to get healthy bone marrow from somebody else.
