Summary

The millennial generation came into adulthood during an American recession, an era of crushing student loan debt and the rise of temporary workers and independent contractors. Add a global pandemic to that precariousness and you’ve got a perfect recipe for burnout.

Today, Greta talks with author Anne Helen Petersen about Can’t Even: How Millennials Became the Burnout Generation. It's our October pick for the Nerdette Book Club. 0:20.3	It's just like a normal book club except sometimes the author stops by. This month's selection is can't even how millennials became the burnout generation. It's by Anne Helen Peterson and it's an expansion of an article that she wrote for
0:33.9	BuzzFeed a couple years ago that went super viral. The book and the article are
0:39.0	both examinations of the numerous forces that have led people to just be completely exhausted.
0:45.9	And you know, just to name a few, we've got student loans or the recession or the prevalence of
0:51.6	smartphones, maybe the cost of health care, there's like
0:55.2	literally a million other things, let alone the pandemic. So of course there is
1:00.4	lots to discuss and welcome to Nernett. It is my pleasure to be here. So before
1:06.4	we get any further I think we need to do some definitions of terms. Let's start with
1:09.9	millennial. How are you defining that?
1:12.5	So I define it as like 1980, born in 1980 to 1995,
1:18.5	technically.
1:19.7	But here's the thing, I think you can be a millennial in your heart.
1:24.7	If the experience of being a millennial is defined by precariousness,
1:30.6	there are people who are technically millennials who maybe do not have the same, you know, they do not
1:37.0	resonate with that feeling of like everything is hard and I'm overwhelmed all the time.
