Unlike the Great Awakening of the 18th century, the revivalist preaching of the so-called "Second Great Awakening" left many people disillusioned with Christianity. On this episode of 5 Minutes in Church History, Dr. Stephen Nichols takes us to a region in New York that still bears scars from the 19th century.

| 0:46.7 | year after year. This was the time of the Erie Canal and it brought all kinds |
| 0:51.6 | of prosperity. It brought lots of people to this region. And of course along |
| 0:56.5 | with that prosperity in towns popping up all sorts of vices came along with |
| 1:01.5 | it. So income the revivalist preachers setting up their tent and with |
| 1:06.1 | impassioned pleas they would call for revival and repentance. But unintended |
| 1:14.0 | consequences followed from these years and decades of revival preaching upon |
| 1:20.8 | revival preaching much of this preaching in this period that we refer to as |
| 1:25.4 | the second great awakening contrasted with the preaching that was part of the |
| 1:30.8 | first great awakening. The first great awakening was very Calvinistic. It stressed |
| 1:36.8 | God's work in the salvation of men and women. But this second great awakening |
| 1:42.8 | trended our minion and stressed cooperating with God and stressed the work |
| 1:48.3 | that men and women do in bringing about their own salvation. Well, let's go |
| 1:53.3 | back 200 years and see the results of this burnt over district. |
