Perhaps the place to start looking for a credibility gap is not in the offices of the government

in Washington, but in the studios of the networks in New York.

That was Richard Nixon's Vice President, Spiro Agno, delivering one of the most controversial

speeches of a tumultuous era, a full-fledged attack on the television news media, given

in Des Moines, Iowa on November 13, 1969.

Drafted by Nixon's speech writer Patrick Buchanan, Agno skewered the anchors and producers

of the three television networks, portraying them as smuggled eatists cut off from the concerns

of real Americans, who nonetheless held unchecked power to control the flow of news to the country.

It was a speech, ironically covered live on the three TV networks themselves, that was

viewed by some as a menacing attack on the First Amendment, but which nonetheless resonated

with a group Nixon called the Silent Majority.

Now a new book lays out the case for why Agno and his speech 50 years ago next month

anticipated the politics of Donald Trump and his attacks on journalists as enemies of

the people.
