There are two traditional rules about American presidential elections

though neither of them seem to apply in this very peculiar 2024 election. The first traditional rule is that

energetic campaigning for votes doesn't begin in earnest until Labor Day this

year Monday the 2nd of September but of course Democrats and Republicans have been

campaigning hard for months. The second rule is that there is often a last minute

October surprise a phrase coined by Ronald Reagan's campaign manager back in 1980, for an extraordinary

event that shifts the political dial. That tradition goes back to 1840, but the surprises have also come early this year, from Donald

Trump being shot, Joe Biden quitting and Kamala Harris taking centre stage

there have been weekly sometimes daily extraordinary shifts in the campaign.

Now Vice President Harris is on the brink of being officially crowned the party's nominee

in the Democratic Convention in Chicago.

It's a hugely important city and Illinois is itself a significant

electoral prize reflected in the fact that between 1860 and 1996 there have been 14 Republican and 11 Democratic conventions in the windy city.
