Summary

How high should standards be for a pastor and his ministry? Do we rate his success in congregation size, fame, or by how white his teeth are? Standards can be unrealistic and unbiblical when a new pastor comes on the scene, and comparisons can foster a culture of critique and criticism. Bad pastors are a reality. However, the church has a common crisis at hand: are we firing, disrespecting, even "bullying" otherwise competent men who don't live up to our superficial standards? But what if there is a real problem with your pastor? How do you deal with it? If you are on either side of this scenario, tune in as our in-house reverends, Carl and Todd, share helpful resources and advice for both congregant and pastor. As for Aimee, she's packin' heat to keep these boys in their place – one nun-chuck for Todd and one for Carl. If you have enjoyed this weeks Bully Pulpit then you will like this free audio download God's Sovereignty and the Call of the Pastor by Eric Redmond  from The Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. Welcome to Mortification of Spin, bully pulpit, a casual conversation about things that count with Carl Truman, Todd Pruitt,

0:22.9

and Amy Bird. Mortification of Spin is a weekly podcast from the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals.

0:29.5

This week, Amy, Todd, and Carl discuss a neglected aspect of pastoral ministry, the abuse some pastors

0:35.9

receive from their congregations. Todd and Carl share

0:39.5

from their ministry experience and help shed light on a rarely discussed topic. At the end of the

0:45.0

podcast, we'll tell you how to download a free MP3 about God's sovereignty over the call of pastors. All right, so me and the guys are on a search right now and we are trying our

1:05.4

darnedest to find what we have heard to be called a safe place.

1:11.6

It seems to be a buzzword now in the evangelical community and we're a little confused on what that is and where we can find one.

1:21.6

Carl, any luck?

1:23.6

Not really, no. I mean, safe place is one of those gibberish terms. Completely ridiculous in many ways. I think

1:31.9

probably had its, it probably had decent enough origins in, say, battered women wanting to find a safe

1:38.2

place to be. But it's since been appropriated by the sort of chatocracy of the politically correct world.

1:45.6

And essentially, you know, I think a safe place is somewhere I can go or be where I'm not

1:51.0

going to have to listen to any opinion that I disagree with.

1:54.1

I'm not going to have to put up with anybody criticizing me.

1:58.2

So it's no wonder it's becoming very popular in kind of reformed evangelicalism

2:02.4

these days. It's very much. Yeah, it's the kind of magical gibberish that the young restless

2:08.4

and reformed will no doubt be heavily into, even as they cruise into middle age. It does actually

2:15.1

raise, though, a serious question. If having trashed the phrase, I can now

2:19.5

use it. Todd, should churches be safe places for pastors? Yeah, that's a good question. Because

2:29.0

statistically, from some studies that have been done as well as just observable

2:36.0

experience there are a lot of churches that are not quote safe places for
