It's time for another look at a comic book movie that you might not think is a comic book movie! We're tackling Bulletproof Monk from 2003, the Chow Yun-fat and Sean William Scott lead action comedy that we discover is completely servicable and forgettable as a movie about a magic scroll that gives you some magic. The fight scenes are okay! The cast chemistry is okay! And the story is okay! What more could you want from a movie nobody has seen or ever talked about. Thanks for watching our Caravan Of Garbage revire

0:00.0 | Welcome back everybody to another episode of Caravana Garbage where we're looking at comic book movies where you might think to yourself, is this a comic book movie? Sort of. Well, of course it is. Oh. Why would we be doing it otherwise? Because we're stupid. We wouldn't put the movie push in here, which isn't a comic book movie, even though it looks like a comic book movie. And maybe there's a comic set after it or something. I don't know. I mean, we might do that. It's not outside the realm of possibility that we would record the whole thing and then get Ben and or Lawrence to do the video. And then in the aftermath go, oh, this wasn't based on a comic book. And then just archive it for years later. And we mentioned on our podcast, The Weekly Planet, people for years would be like, where's the push Carriverna Garbage? |
0:38.7 | Also, it's bad. |
0:39.8 | We recorded it. That actually happened to us. That's right, yes. So yeah, demarted if you will, one of us will die and then we'll have to release it. At our funeral. That's right. At the other guy's funeral. Well, anyways, please leave a like because we're talking about bulletproof monk. |
0:37.4 | Wow! |
0:38.3 | Now the comic started in 1990. Well, anyways, please leave a like because we're talking about bulletproof monk. |
0:54.8 | Wow! |
0:55.6 | Now, the comic started in 1999. |
0:58.1 | And finished in 1999. |
0:59.5 | It's not a lot of issues. |
1:01.5 | It's by Brett Lewis. |
1:02.9 | It got published by Image in the era of Image Comics where they've done a bunch of stuff that sold pretty well and then it dropped off. |
1:09.9 | But it's before Invincible and the Walking Dead. So it's in that kind of era. What I would say, though, also, it is a three-issue miniseries. Yeah. It wasn't an ongoing and it suffered such low sales that they cut it. Oh, okay. Yeah, but it had to, if it had been pretty good and people liked it, don't you think that would have kept it going? Well, they made a movie, didn't they? Years later. Years later. Weird thing to adapt and not very accurate from what I can tell. |
1:33.6 | Most of the miniseries is the search for the bulletproof monk. He's a legend. |
1:38.7 | Is he more bulletproof in the comic than he is in the movie? They should call him monk you can shoot. |
1:44.5 | I would love it if they called him, Mike. you can still shoot him, Mason. Yeah, but you can still shoot a bulletproof vest, can't you? Yeah, but like, it does damage to him. But it does damage to a bulletproof vest when you shoot a bulletproof vest. Okay, they should have called it bulletproof vest monk. I think we can all agree on that. I think we can all agree on that. Also, the comic book art by Mark, |
1:44.3 | Michael, shoot a bulletproof vest. Okay, they should have called it bulletproof vest monk. I think we can all agree on that. I think we can all agree on that. Also, the comic book art by Michael Avon Irming, who did the comic book Powers. Oh, there you go. It was also turned into a TV series, which is really bad. It went straight to your PlayStation or something. That's right. In like 2013. It was like that U2 album I got delivered directly to your PlayStation and you couldn't get rid of it no matter how much you wanted to. That's right. That comic book series is great. I think it's just a catchy title. I think this is why this was eventually adapted because it's bulletproof monk. What does that even mean? It sounds pretty cool. It definitely is that kind of pairing of East Meets West, which was the type of movie that happened for the longest time. We had rush hour. We had Shanghai Knights. We had Rising Sun. We had Lethal We Had Lethal Weapon. We had China salesman. That's a Stephen cigar one. China salesman. He sells like porcelain. Come into my shop. I'm going to fight you sitting down. 50% off sources. Today only. I'm the biggest and the baddest. I was in the Navy Seals, but I was too good for the Navy Seals. It was too fast. You're looking at my hair. I don't look my hair. My hair was too natural, naturally black for the Navy Seals. What a gem that man is. I agree. And by that, I mean a sex criminal. Oh, also agree. Anyway, what do you think of this? I mean, the idea of Nazis versus monks is interesting, right? That's interesting, but it would have been nice to see more action set pieces featuring that, but it really wasn't. And maybe some action set pieces, which wasn't just people hitting each other with poles, because a lot of it is that. That's right, uh-huh. Obviously, it came out in the wake of the Matrix. Sure. And they're looking for, like you said, more... The wake tricks. More... What? wake tricks oh in the wake tricks of the make |
3:42.7 | tricks I get it okay right that's a hashtag right yeah terrific and they just wanted more of this |
3:48.1 | stuff and clearly you know this was the point where they were looking through comic books and |
3:51.6 | video games good point and they're like what can we do with this the problem with I look I think |
3:56.0 | it is serviceable. |
3:58.2 | Serviceable and kind of in good fun, but it's missing, it's missing a bunch of things, |
4:03.6 | honestly, that would make it very just fun and memorable. You know what I mean? It's not bloody |
