We're bringing you stories from Brazil ahead of the presidential elections in October.

Today we're taking you back to 1960 to bring you the story of how Brazil's new capital city,

where Brazil was built.

The city was designed by a modernist architect called Oscar Niemeyer

and was supposed to symbolize Brazil's future ambitions.

In 2014, Flair Bose spoke to Osario Machado, an engineer who helped build the city.

It's a April 21st, 1960, and President Jussilino Kubichek is inaugurating his dream.

A new capital city built in the empty heartland of his country, Brazil.

This is a doubly historic day for Brazil, President Kubichek told the crowds,

because we have combined our glorious past with this epic project of building a new city.

The man who built Brazil for him was the architect Oscar Niemeyer,

who spoke to the BBC in the year 2000.

The idea of Brazilian art is an old one, but it was President Jussilino Kubichek,

who took up the challenge of building the city.

I had already worked with him and he sought me out.

President Kubichek's idea was to build a new capital, to bring progress to the interior of Brazil.
