0:44.0	Last month we were joined by author and professor David Pepper and we were talking about how the heart of democracy,
0:49.4	the way democracy actually plays out in America, is shaped at the state level.
0:53.7	That the federal government is of course essential and we must win the presidency, the House
0:57.7	and the Senate, but we can't stop there thinking we've won.
1:01.1	Because long term that's a losing strategy. So many of the
1:04.6	terrible laws we're seeing from the abortion bans in Arizona to the six-week
1:09.2	ban in Florida to the attempt to pass laws to stop pregnant women from
1:12.3	leaving their state in Texas are state laws, from
1:15.7	state legislatures.
1:17.7	Even many federal laws end up coming down to how the states themselves choose to implement
1:21.8	them. People often blame the president
1:23.8	when things don't go their way, but so much of what affects our everyday lives
1:27.4	goes through our state houses. Which is why I've invited Melissa Walker of the
1:31.9	States Project back on the show today, to talk
1:34.2	about the importance of winning at the State level and addressing many of our biggest concerns
