Summary

We report on the Full Council budget meeting of Feb 24th and discuss the recent by election results in Gorton & Denton, & in Shirley, as well as the fresh news this weekend of the US attack on Iran.

Among other things, the Council will discuss and hopefully approve a budget for 2025/26 for Portsmouth. A surprise change at the start of the meeting - with the last two members of the Portsmouth Independents Party (PIP) defecting to Reform - bringing the Reform Councillors to 10 and cementing them as the official opposition on Portsmouth City Council.

How much will Council Tax be going up this year?

With a backdrop of looming local government reorganisation uncertainty, rising costs and ever increasing draws of the public purse - how will Portsmouth balance it’s budget? What investments will be made to make lives better for residents and businesses? Which projects will, and which projects won’t get funded?

Good evening and welcome to the Pompey Politics Podcast. The podcast we explore international,

0:06.2

national and local politics in a fine and reasoned way to get to the heart of the matter.

0:12.8

I'm Ian Tiny Morris. And I'm Simon Sandsbury. Good evening. Good evening. And we've got it all

0:19.6

this week, haven't we? It was originally meant to be entirely local.

0:23.6

Then the national threw us a bone.

0:26.6

And then this morning, or overnight, I guess we'd better focus on probably what could end up

0:34.6

being the biggest international story of 100 years, but let's hope not.

0:39.8

Yes, so the, well, the American and Israeli-backed attack on Iran and the death of their supreme leader,

0:54.0

Iatoli-Hobaini? That's the one. Yeah supreme leader, Ayatolli Khobani?

0:56.0

That's the one. Yeah. Yeah. No. And obviously has ruled Iran with a rod of iron for 47 years.

1:04.0

And yeah, I guess we were going to have to now sort of sit and watch the UK position is we didn't take part but I

1:12.9

guess now you know when you look at the response of Iran that appears to be firing off drones

1:17.9

in all direction including you know putting citizens at risk in Dubai and British bases

1:24.1

we are now according to the minister this morning, taking defensive action to

1:28.9

protect British citizens. But it looks like this one could be a proper global who-hah.

1:37.2

Yeah, it does seem that it seemed a bit odd to that, what was it, Kirstama, suggested that the

1:43.7

Iranian regime should, um, should come to the negotiation table and, and should, should kind of stop. Well, they, they were at the negotiation table and, um, that, they're being, you know, they're, they're being attacked by, let's be honest, vastly superior foes.

2:02.2

So it's hard to kind of know how that's going to land.

2:08.5

Yeah, it's that interesting thing, isn't it?

2:10.6

You know, again, with the negotiating table, it's that, you know, Iran's been a state

2:16.3

backer of terrorism for the last 47 years.

2:20.2

You know, I believe there have been 20 terror plots that have been kind of funded by Iran
