Greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen. To a producer, one of the most gratifying sounds in the theatre, is what may be classified academically as the vent-flow rices.

For backstage we have a slang name for it that I'll call the tummy laugh.

Past masters at producing this phenomenon are tonight's stars, Bud Abbott and Lou Castello, who hit Hollywood with the force of a hurricane less than a year ago.

The picture that put them over was Buck Private, which Universal are made in the ordinary course of the studio schedule.

Suddenly when everybody on the lock from office boy to president, woke up to the fact that gold had been discovered in Universal City.

Buck Private had panned out as a bananza, and that's the play we picked for Abbott and Castello's debut in the Lux Radio Theatre.

It's a story of life in an army camp, some highly imaginary army camp, where a tent flap opens and Abbott and Castello blow in with a draft.

But of course, any similarity between this play and life in the armed forces of the Republic is purely coincidental.

Hiding behind the curtain now are Abbott and Castello, so we'll raise it.

For the first act of Buck Private, starring Bud Abbott as Smithy and Lou Castello as Herbie.

With Benny Rubin as Sergeant Collins, Lynn Carver as Judy, and Gino Donald as Bob.

September the 14, 1940. Congress passes the first peace time selective training act in the history of our nation.

From the farms they come, and from the factories, from quiet villages, from roaring cities.

The youth of America, on the mark, swelling the ranks with volunteers.

Step right up fellas, volunteers in this line, fasties over there. Keep it moving fellas.

That's an army recruiting station, in a vacant movie theater, with a long line of men outside.

But just down the street are two boys who haven't heard the news yet.

These two boys don't know what day it is. One of them doesn't even know what time it is.

They're up to their old tricks, telling neckties on speak corners.

Now gather around me, Jens, just a little closer. Thank you, thank you. That's fine, now Jens.
