Today's episode is a brief introduction to neuroanatomy or the Anatomy of the Brain.

It is actually an edited version of episode 32, which originally aired back in 2008.

I've been getting requests to return to some of the basic topics that I covered back in the first couple of years.

So I chose this episode because understanding the structure of the brain can help us to get a better handle on how it works.

Obviously the audio format is not ideal for a discussion of brain structure, but I decided to tackle it with the help of a wonderful book by David Bainbridge called Beyond the Zonials of Zen.

This book is aimed at readers of all backgrounds, which makes it perfect for the equally diverse audience of the Brain Science Podcast.

If you are new to the Brain Science Podcast or Neuroanatomy, I hope you will focus on the big picture.

Don't get stressed out trying to learn any of the strange terms I will have to throw at you.

On the other hand, if you are a medical person

who perhaps took Neuroanatomy long ago,

Beyond the Zaniials of Zen was published in January of 2008 and the Zonials of Zen are the tiny fibers that connect the lenses of the eye to the muscle ring or iris.

This is just one of the many weird named parts of the brain.

One of the points the main bridge makes is that the gross

anatomy of the brain was mapped out

before we knew much about what the structures actually did.
