Hello everyone. Welcome back to the Epic Gardening podcast and as promised today's

episode is talking about broccoli but specifically Romanesco broccoli because I got a

question from a reviewer of the

podcast so he reviewed the podcast on iTunes travel and man and asked how to get

Romanesco broccoli to form heads he's been having some trouble with that. He or she, I actually

don't know who this person is because they used a username. But anyways, we're

going to talk about it because broccoli is not only a delicious plant personally I really enjoy it but it's a beautiful

plant and especially if you grow the Romanesco version because if you're sort of a garden

nerd or just a nerd in general and you like mathematics.

Romanesco broccoli is one of the most beautiful examples of fractals in nature that you'll

ever see.

So we want to experience those fractals. We want those heads to form and we want to consume,

harvest and eat those beautiful heads. But we can't do that if those heads don't form.

So we're going to talk about a couple things that can contribute to that

phenomenon, that phenomenon of growing broccoli and not getting any head out of it. So this is

kind of an annoying problem.

It's one that I dealt with when I was first starting to grow broccoli

for the very first time when I got my very first community

garden plot.

So broccoli, as we all know, it's a cool weather vegetable. It's a great

vegetable to grow and fall, but it is a member of the Brassica family, which means

that it has a ton of diseases and a ton of pests that like to eat it.
