hands you over to other sounds, the voices of the river, the waking wind that is slept in the sea, the siren wind that clears the way for morning and for death, beckons you up the protesting stairs of a waterfront hotel, opens a door and invites you to consider a dead girl. She sits sprawled on the floor, her head resting on the edge of a bed, her eyes gray, like mirrors reflecting the gray of the sea through the open window.
