Summary
All week you may have been reading headlines about flight cancellations and soaring airfares. Well, to round off the week, I have been talking to the boss of the leading western Channel ferry operator, Brittany Ferries. Chief executive Christophe Mathieu says he can guarantee no increased prices – due to the company's policy of hedging. And he says there is no shortage of LNG or maritime fuel for his vessels.

| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me, Simon Calde. It's Friday the 24th of April. |
| 0:10.2 | You may well, as I have been doing, been reading all week about fuel surcharges. Well, interestingly, the leading Western Channel ferry company, Brittany Ferries, is saying no surcharges. |
| 0:26.9 | I've been hearing more from Christoph Mattoe. |
| 0:30.1 | He is the chief executive of British and E Ferries. |
| 0:33.5 | And I put it to him, you're running a business. |
| 0:36.3 | Price of oil has gone through the roof. Why would |
| 0:38.5 | you not want to surcharge passengers? Well, because we have done what we normally do, which is |
| 0:44.8 | edging, so we've bought forward our fuel, and therefore we don't have any uncertainty going |
| 0:51.5 | forward, so therefore we don't need to surcharge because we know what we're going to pay our fuel |
| 0:56.5 | for the next month. |
| 0:57.7 | But do you know what you're paying, for instance, in October? |
| 1:01.2 | Yeah, up to October, we know. |
| 1:02.8 | And it's broadly what the price were before the crisis started, i.e. on the basis of |
| 1:07.9 | $70 a barrel, because that's what we hedged. But when you edge, you take a gamble. |
| 1:14.4 | If it was going down for whatever reason, if the barrel had gone down to $40, we would pay $70, |
| 1:21.0 | but of course it's a very prudent way because it secures your season. And I guess we're very pleased of having done so because, |
| 1:29.3 | of course, with what's happened. And at the same time, we happen to notice that it's not come, |
| 1:34.4 | not everybody's done that. And that's why we want to also flag out that if people are worried to book |
| 1:41.2 | or they worry about prices going up or anything like that. They don't have to |
| 1:45.7 | worry with us because we can commit to the fact that our prices will not go up because of the |
| 1:50.9 | fuel crisis. That's a strong position to be in because lots of companies, whether they are |
| 1:56.7 | ferry companies, whether they are airlines, whether they are bus companies even, are saying, |
