British and French soldiers spent much of the 18th century locked in battle.

Yet while the Anglo-French relationship was apparently defined by war, behind the scenes,

a number of influential thinkers were attempting to establish an entente between the two nations,

an agreement that would establish lucrative trading opportunities in the nation's growing empires.

In conversation with our production editor Spencer Mizzin, John Chauvelin, the author of

Trading with the Enemy, Britain, France and the 18th century Quest for a Peaceful World Order,

describes the attempts to reset the dial on Anglo-French relations. John, the relationship between

Britain and France over the course of the 18th century was turbulent, to say the least.
