Summary

#46. Andy spoke with master rigger Brion Toss from Bermuda several years back about the art and science of a proper rope whipping. It was originally for an article in Yachting World, but we've repurposed it into another Essay Friday episode. Brion is set to come on the podcast soon for a full-on interview, but in the meantime, enjoy his philosophy on rope whippings and learn a thing or two this week! briontoss.com

Greetings. Welcome back to 59 North Sailing Podcast. I'm your host, Andy Schell, and this is episode number 46.

This is an episode I recorded a while ago and originally released on the Two Inspired Guys podcast, but it's a chat that I had. I was in Bermuda and Skype to Brian Toss, Master Rigger, who's going to be on the podcast as an interview in the next couple weeks. Just have to find a time that works for both of us so we can schedule the chat. He's been busy and I've been busy, but we have been in touch and we're definitely going to do that in the near future. But anyway, this is Brian's thoughts on the proper rope

whipping. I was doing an article for yachting world on the same subject to a couple years ago,

and I thought, well, who better to ask than the master of yacht rigging and the writer, the author

of the Riggers Apprentice on what a proper

rope whipping is like. So this is my chat with Brian. It's about 20 minutes long. It's an

interview sort of, but it's mostly Brian talking and explaining how rope whippings are as much

an art as a science and sort of gives you a little bit of the background on his philosophy

on yacht rigging, which we'll dive into quite a bit more in detail when we have Brian on the podcast

for the interview. So I'll leave it at that. Leave your feedback as usual and enjoy episode

number 46 with Brian Toss explaining the art of rope whippings.

Thanks for listening.

So first of all, we probably were in agreement that the more common mind anti-ravelling measures are

1:53.2

lubberly and not to be countenance, specifically the butane back splice, which is toxic and sharp-edged and can break the part anyway.

2:04.7

And it's hard to get through tight spaces sometimes because it's hard and bulgy.

2:09.4

And it's ugly, it is so ugly, and it can, you know, we've run and hurt people.

2:13.0

So for all those reasons, I hate it.

2:16.0

And, of course, you can't do it.

2:17.2

The rope is wet terribly well if you well, even if you had to.
