Summary

We’re in the middle of a fundraising campaign to bring the show back in October. We’ve been working hard on some new scripts we're hoping to make, and in this episode we'll hear from Hunter Nelson about the story he’s working on.

We have all new merch for sale, and for a limited time, we're taking pre-orders for a vinyl pressing of Silvia's Blood and Moon Graffiti. To see what we have to offer, go to:

https://certifiedcrucial.com/truthshop

We’re taking pre-orders through June 22. The album cost is $40, and all of the profits will go to making a new season of The Truth.

And if you don't have $40, we're also selling buttons, stickers, and a brand new t-shirt design based on our logo. So if you love our stories and want to hear more, help us make a brand new season by pre-ordering your very own vinyl pressing of Silvia's Blood and Moon Graffiti right now. We're also taking donations, every little bit helps. Thank you so much!

It really felt like even when I took the tape out,

I was like, God, there's a terrible war going on in this tape.

to spend some time in a war.

I know now that it's not so great.

0:40.6

Yeah, it was safe.

0:41.7

It was very safe, yes.

0:43.2

Yeah, that's what fiction offers us, is a safe way to have all kinds of experiences in life.

0:47.7

That's right. They never shot me with a laser.

This is The Truth. I'm Jonathan Mitchell, and I'm talking with Hunter Nelson, who in addition to being a lifelong fan of audio storytelling, has written many of my favorite episodes of The Truth, The Body Genius, Dan Slang, Heat Meat. His stories are often set in a familiar world, but with details that are entirely invented,

creating a sense of parallel reality that allows us to observe the world from a fresh perspective that feels both fun and revealing.

And now he's working on a new story.

1:21.4

I'm working on a story about a guy who owns an arcade, a pinball arcade in New York City in the 1970s, the late 1970s right

before video games come in and push pinball back to the margins. And he's helping the police,

using a specific pinball machine to draw a gangster out of the shadows, someone who's in hiding.

1:44.2

Yeah, I love that era. I love this, the late 70s pinball. It's so mechanical.

1:48.5

Yeah. It doesn't yet feel cornered into changing by video games. They're unselfconsciously continuing to be pinball.
