1:21.6	It's the 8th century and Europe is a continent in transition. Christianity is spreading. Tribal alliances are crumbling.
1:33.4	And at the centre of it all is Charlemagne, king of the Franks, future emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.
1:42.3	In the summer of 776, Charlemagne's forces were locked in battle with the Saxons.
1:48.0	A fierce pagan tribe resisting conversion to Christianity. The Saxons laid siege to Sigurburg Castle,
1:57.0	held by the Franks. The stronghold was under heavy attack. Then something changed.
2:05.6	Multiple sources describe a miraculous event that took place as the Saxons attempted to
2:12.6	overrun the castle. Let me read you a passage from the Royal Frankish Annals, an official chronicle of the
2:21.0	Carolingian Empire. And when the Christians had started to fight back, God's great power manifested
2:30.1	itself. For as they were preparing to assault the castle castle the Saxons saw the appearance of two
2:37.0	flaming shields in the sky which hovered over the church inside the fortress at this
2:44.0	sight fear seized them and they fled two flaming shields hovering, hovering, spinning, unmoving, defending the Christians.
2:55.6	That's not just a miracle, that's a sighting, a divine sign, or something else.
3:05.6	Now, in the context of the time, anything unexplained was labelled divine.
3:10.3	The Frank saw these fiery discs as a sign from God, a heavenly intervention in their moment of need.
