Summary
#107. Paul Exner sits down with Brian Duff in Tortola. Brian's old friends with both Paul & Andy. Brian started Southbound Rigging in Annapolis, MD a few years back, where Andy first started working as a rigger in 2009. Brian sold the shop to Mike Meer (who's been on the podcast!) and sailed his Westsail 32 south to the BVI to start a new life as a boat broker.
Paul of course lives in the BVI, and soon became friends with Brian. They chat on this episode about Brian's work as a boat broker, his life as a rigger, how he moved south from Annapolis and his new venture as a restaurant owner at The Island Last Resort in Trellis Bay. If you're ever cruising in the BVI, stop in and have a drink!

| 0:08.9 | Greetings, greetings, and welcome back to 59 degrees north, a podcast about sailing. I'm your host, Andy Schell, and this is a bonus episode. |
| 0:18.4 | So I'm not sure what number this is, but it's going to be up as a bonus episode. |
| 0:21.9 | This is the Paul Exner Show. He's got Brian Duff on this week. Paul, again, as you know, |
| 0:27.4 | is going to be doing some work with me on East Byron, and he and I do a bunch of deliveries |
| 0:31.0 | together. He's based down in Tortola and has his own sailing business called Modern Geographic. |
| 0:36.4 | So check that out at Modern Geographic.com. |
| 0:39.5 | Paul has been doing some interviews with me and for me for the podcast, have had some feedback about |
| 0:44.9 | that. So I know lots of you enjoy listening to me on the show, and some of you had said you really |
| 0:49.8 | enjoy listening to Paul. I appreciate your honesty with that. So again, enjoy Paul's show. You'll get used to him after a while. And if not, you can always listen to me on Tuesday. So don't worry, I'm not going anywhere. Big thanks to Paul for doing this for me. I think it's a lot of fun for him, and it's going to be great working together with Paul. So I'll keep this one short. Check out Paul's website again, moderngeographic.com. |
| 1:11.9 | Of course, you can find me on 59-north.com. I appreciate those of you that continue your support |
| 1:17.9 | with the coffee and the sailing passages and this, that, and the other thing. So without further ado, |
| 1:23.2 | I'm going to hand it over to Paul, who interviews Brian Duff, a yacht broker who both of us are |
| 1:28.5 | mutual friends with, actually. Brian's from Annapolis. The connection with me is that Brian started |
| 1:34.6 | southbound yacht rigging many years ago, and I ended up working for Mike Meir, who bought |
| 1:42.4 | southbound yacht rigging from Brian Duff. So I never actually |
| 1:45.8 | worked for Brian, but I worked for his company for a while. That's how I learned to become a |
| 1:49.2 | rigor. And Mike then sold southbound to Port Annapolis Marina. So it's all kind of connected here. |
| 1:55.6 | And Brian has since moved down to Tortola. He sailed his, he sailed his Westdale 32 for a while. His dad had a schooner. |
| 2:04.1 | He's very deep in the sailing industry. He's been sailing his whole life. Now he's a broker down |
| 2:08.4 | there and actually opened up another resort in Trellis Bay called the Last Resort, a little |
| 2:14.6 | island out in the middle of Trellis Bay, where incidentally, Paul keeps his boat moored. |
