Brezhnev and the era of stagnation.

Last time, we recounted the beginning of the oligarchic rule of Kossigan, Brezenev, and Podgorni.

A consultative government as opposed to the sole leadership of the three previous

heads of the Soviet Union, Lenin, Stalin, and Khrushchev.

The era that we will be covering in this episode is the era of stagnation, a term first used by none other than Mikhail Gorbachev, when he became

head of the USSR.

It's also an era where D'Tant was being negotiated with the West, and also a time where incredible

amounts of manpower, resources, and money was spent on making the Soviet Union a leader in military might.

It would also be the period that accelerated the march

towards the dissolution of the USSR.

Breshnev, by by 1969 was beginning to consolidate more and more power into his hands.

His method, by using the very thing he condemned Crurushchev for, nepotism.

While Khrushchev wanted to ferret out corruption,

Brezhnev actually thought it was acceptable,

as he was once quoted as saying nobody lives just on his wages.

Within the population a joke used to go around which said they pretend to pay us and we pretend to work.

Theft in the workplace was a major problem throughout the Soviet Union

as there was a general sense that one had to look out for one's self and one's family.
