Summary

Brexit’s not done yet. EU leaders endorsed the withdrawal agreement and a political declaration on future relations on Sunday, but even if this passes the UK parliament, we’re still potentially years away from an agreement on the permanent relationship. MLex reporters Zosia Wanat and Mike Acton, who were at the latest summit, talk to Brussels news editor Sam Wilkin about the issues that will come to the fore if and when we reach a transition period — from competition to kippers.

Hello and welcome to another M-Lex podcast. I'm Sam Wilkin, Brussels News Editor, and today we're going to talk about Brexit. The ball is once again in the UK's court after EU leaders approved the withdrawal agreement on Sunday. Whether or not it gets through Parliament is anyone's guess. But let's say it does. What then?

Here to give us the view from Brussels are Zosio Anat and Mike Acton,

0:25.9

who both swapped brunch for Brexit reporting on Sunday.

0:29.0

Hello, Zosio and Mike.

0:30.3

Hi.

0:31.1

Hey.

0:31.7

Zosia, what did the EU leaders agree on Sunday exactly?

0:35.8

So the EU leaders had two key Brexit documents to endorse

0:41.3

during the Sunday summit. One of them is the withdrawal agreement. So this is this big,

0:47.6

more than 500 pages document that outlines the conditions of the divorce. So it basically outlines the provisions for the citizens' rights,

0:57.9

the UK financial commitment,

0:59.8

and it also ensures the transition period until the end of the 2020

1:04.7

with this possibility of extension, which is very important for businesses.

1:10.3

The other document is the political declaration on the future relations between the EU and the

1:15.6

UK, and this is much more of an aspirational document.

1:20.6

So it's non-binding and it somehow shows how the EU and the UK would like to see their relation in the

1:30.7

future after the transition period ends. And what I understand from both of these documents is

1:37.2

that it's something that everyone's been able to agree on, or at least all the national

1:41.1

leaders have been able to agree on, but it's not quite, it doesn't quite cover everything, does it?

1:45.9

There's the Irish border question,

1:47.4

and there's also been some other controversies around fisheries, around Gibraltar.

1:51.9

Where are these gaps now and how were they papered over?
