The one thing that allowed me to sleep at night was the knowledge, or at least the perception, that the courts would provide a final backstop against the worst of Donald Trump's corrupt Maga agenda.

It was the courts that shut down his attempts to overturn the election.

It was the courts that denied him the sweeping executive privilege claims he so coveted,

acknowledging that presidents were not kings.

Judge after judge in a myriad of cases, both liberal and conservative, not only held up the rule of law, but excoriated those who thought to bend it to their will.

Political pundits proclaimed proudly that in the end the system worked. The courts were the guardrails against tyranny. We reported on text messages obtained by CBS News and the Washington Post that

illustrate the extraordinary relationship between the wife of a Supreme Court justice and the Trump
