A few weeks ago on the show we talked to the historian Nicholas Mulder.

He wrote a book about the history of economic sanctions and whether or not they work.

And his answer was not so much, although the US keeps trying.

In most cases, I think it's clear that if the goal of those sanctions was behavioral change,

only a very small amount of them have worked or they've worked only a little bit, but not

actually fully.

But if the US and Europe don't want to get involved in a ground or air or sea war with

Russia, hitting its financial sector is one of the only options.

On February 26, the US, Canada and European allies announced they had committed to kicking

some Russian banks out of swift.
