So we had retail sales numbers come out and smash expectations.

This is according to CNBC.

But there's a big butt, as there always is in these types of numbers when you scratch beneath the surface.

Well, maybe they revised it that quickly.

Consumer spending jumped in July as retail sales were up 1% much better than expected.

Well, when I was watching CNBC this morning at the gym, they were saying it smashed expectations.

And I was sitting there scratching

my head and saying, really? That something doesn't pass the old sniff test here. Key talking points.

Advance retail sales accelerate 1% of the month. Much better than the 0.3% estimate.

In other economic news, weekly jobless claims totaled 227,000, a

decrease 7,000 lower than the estimate of 235. Report comes in the same week as data showing that

inflation has eased slightly in July.
