And lately, you've probably been hearing about it a lot.

The Trump administration has announced plans to dismantle it.

And for many, the move feels shocking, even unprecedented.

On March 20th, President Trump signed this executive order, which is aimed at closing the

U.S. Department of Education and giving authority to the states.

But in reality, it's just the latest chapter in a long-running battle over who controls education in America,

a battle that stretches all the way back to the Civil War and intersects with nearly every turning point in U.S. history,

from World Wars to the space race to one of the

country's most infamous cults. This week, we're digging into that history, tracing the

federal government's evolving role in education and how the Department of Education ultimately

became a cornerstone of American life.
