I've spent a lot of time in Brazil, and I've always been painfully aware of the number of people who live rough in its bustling cities.

Last year I was in Salvador in the northeast of the country

and I was reading a book about people just like this. It was written 80 years ago, but somehow it felt

just as relevant now.

and about the lives of the people on the city streets.
