Today's story comes from Brandon Martel.

Brandon is a high school teacher and his workplace is a family affair.

My brother, his wife, and I is a family affair.

My brother, his wife, and I all teach at the same school. I teach choir, my brother teaches band, and his wife is the school nurse.

My brother's wife was expecting to give birth to a and his wife is the school nurse.

My brother's wife was expecting to give birth to a baby girl toward the end of March 2022,

so when I got a phone call from him around 8 p.m. on March 21st, I was expecting him to say something like,

Hey man, our baby was just born, come on down to the hospital and meet your new niece.

Instead, what happened was a short phone call of broken sentences choked off by weeping, in which my brother

told me that his daughter had not made it out of the womb alive. She was stillborn. At the end of the call I

assured him that I keep things going at work just like I had been planning to do

anyways.

When I got to work the next day, I sat down in front of my laptop at my office and I realized I had actually overlooked the fact that just like my brother and sister-in-law were grieving, I too was actually far too sad and distraught to be at work, but I did the best I could.

A couple days later, at the end of an assembly at school the

assistant principal told the entire student body the news. I was sobbing

uncontrollably in the back but after that assembly was over, I felt like I might
