This is not the media.

This is hell. On April 4th, Chicago made history again, when voters for the first time elected consecutive African American mayors with Brandon Johnson defeating Paul Valis.

Valis had won the general election with Johnson coming in a distant second place.

The slim victory in the runoff election by Johnson was unexpected by many as polls had consistently shown. and was his campaign in the runoff vote was funded far more than Johnson's and

Valis had obtained key endorsements from the Fraternal Order of Police and big name

leading Democrats like US Senator Dick Durbin former former Congressman Bobby Rush, who is an ex-Black Panther,

and Obama Secretary of Education Arnie Duncan.

Around the country, many saw Brandon Johnson's electoral victory as a victory for

progressives, not just in Chicago,

but within the Democratic Party, nationally a potential sign that the party was actually finally

moving back toward the left after over a half century of

centrist in right-leaning neoliberalism. Johnson stood for teachers as he was an

organizer within the Chicago Teachers Union.

Meanwhile, Valis and former Education Secretary Duncan

have been key in spreading school privatization,

supporting an expansion of charter and military schools.

But can the newly elected Mayor Johnson fulfill his campaign promises of approaching

policing in a way that is very different from past mayors while

addressing the city's budgetary problems by seeking more resources and revenue from

corporations and the wealthiest.
