In chapter 20, we finished the first half,

and then we come to Paul summoning the elders of the church from Miletus to say goodbye.

He knows he's on his way to Jerusalem. He knows he's on his way to Rome, and he knows that the

opposition awaits him,

and that he may not see them again.

He is a man on a mission, and he knew that this mission could cost him his very life.

So they come to him, and he spends these first section of verses, beginning with verse 18,

the middle of the verse, you know from the first day I set foot in Asia how I was with you the whole time. I served the Lord with all

humility and tears and with trials, which came upon me through the plots of the Jews. But I did not

stop verse 20 from declaring to you anything that was profitable
